Developer FAQ

Does this break the rules of Apple's SDK?

OpenClip is 100% SDK kosher. Using Zac White's "open clipboard" technique, copy / paste between applications is now 100% legitimate and 100% possible.

How does it work?

OpenClip utilizes a shared space on the iPhone. Applications that use the OpenClip framework can access this common area to write to and read from, allowing copy / paste between participating apps.

Will Apple shut OpenClip down?

As stated above, OpenClip does not violate Apple's SDK. Additionally, several applications are already in the App Store with the OpenClip framework and copy / paste functionality.

How can developers get involved?

OpenClip is a truly collaborative effort. Without passionate developers set on improving their applications, OpenClip would not exist.

First off, implement the OpenClip framework into your existing/in-development applications (this is extremely easy). Show your participation by placing the OpenClip badge on your website.

Get your fellow-developers involved. Write about OpenClip on your blog, send out info to your mailing list, let your Wednesday night dev group know about it.

Also, give us comments, feedback, ideas, and let us know how you can contribute to the development of OpenClip and the advent of copy / paste for the iPhone.

Is this intended to compete with Apple's future solution?

OpenClip is an interim solution. For full, completely-integrated, system-wide copy / paste, Apple will need to implement a solution.

What is the UI for copy / paste?

Proximi, Inc., the developers of MagicPad (first copy & paste implementation on the iPhone), has produced a demo video of user-interface guidelines for copy / paste. Click here to watch the video
